Marian Hoffart’s life as an artist did not begin until she reached retirement age and ended a long career in teaching, so perhaps it is not surprising that she sometimes looks to the past for inspiration. Building Painting “Several of the paintings depict my grandparents’ house in Nebraska, a place where I spent a lot of time as a child,’’ said Hoffart, who is now 83 and lives in Needham. At the age of 60, she began studying painting, first at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln and then at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Children Painting A year ago, she was one of 25 artists to receive a $25,000 grant from the AOL Artists program. “One of the paintings is modeled on a photo I have of my mother and her parents camping during a trip they took from Nebraska to California to visit my brother. Famous Painting Another painting shows my parents’ wedding, based on their wedding portrait. That took place in 1922.’’ Flower PaintingPerhaps even more unusual than the subjects of Hoffart’s paintings is what she uses in place of canvas: old linens given to her by her grandmother. Oil Painting Tablecloths, napkins, and hand towels all serve as the backdrop for her paintings.
