You could say Caprica has it all: family drama, teen rebellion, cool technology and, yes, even an avatar.
Actually, many avatars populate this new series spawned by Battlestar Galactica DVD .
But don't confuse the prequel with its Syfy predecessor; they're as different as flight and stay.
Instead of inspiring you to look up at the sky, Caprica is more likely to inspire comparisons on the ground ¡ª to the people next door, your kid's high school mentor, teens who can't be pried away from their computers.
It's also about two things we're all too familiar with: technology run amok and terrorism fueled by religious zealousness.
¡°This show is really nothing like Battlestar Galactica DVD ,¡± writer/producer Ronald D. Moore told TV critics at a Caprica press session. ¡°It has a completely different tone, completely different mood. I was particularly attracted to the idea of doing a science-fiction piece that was not built on a foundation of action adventure.¡± Like its parent series, it's a character piece full of political commentary and religious overtones, only without Vipers and Cylons attacking each other every week. With Caprica, Moore added, he could really ¡°dig into a people and a society and how and why it all came unglued.¡±
Caprica debuts at 8 p.m. Friday on Syfy with a two-hour premiere. And what an opener! We get virtual sex orgies, shocking violence and grieving parents who would stop at nothing to get their children back, in one form or another.
Actually, the pilot has been around for a while. In a novel move, Syfy released it on DVD last year. The actual series, however, is only now being launched.
It's set on the planet Caprica, 58 years before Battlestar Galactica DVD , and illustrates how humanity came to create the robotic Cylons. It also introduces us to the dad of one of TV's most respected space commanders: William Adama, who's just a boy in Caprica.
What if you weren't a viewer of Battlestar Galactica DVD ? No worries. Caprica is stand-alone enough to be enjoyed by everyone.
The premiere focuses on Zoe Graystone (Alessandra Torresani), a teen genius who concocts a way to duplicate herself through virtual-reality technology. In short, she creates an avatar. Her real self, tragically, doesn't last long. Early on, Zoe's boyfriend, who espouses the underground dogma of one god rather than the accepted belief in many, arms himself with a bomb and blows up the train they're on.
The tragedy ends up uniting Zoe's wealthy inventor father, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, Pulp Fiction), and immigrant lawyer Joseph Adama (Esai Morales La Bamba), whose wife and daughter also were killed in the bombing.
After Daniel discovers Zoe's avatar, he sets out to use it to re-create Zoe in robotic form and appeals to Joseph's own grief to gain his help. Adama, you see, has ties to underworld figures who can help him secure what's necessary to bring back not only a version of Zoe, but one of Joseph's daughters, Tamara. The results, as you'll see, are as stunning as they are disturbing.
Battlestar Galactica DVD
The two men are just a slice of this edgy pie. Polly Walker (Rome) portrays Sister Clarice Willow, the headmistress at Zoe's school who secretly espouses taboo religious beliefs. Paula Malcomson (Deadwood) plays Zoe's mom, who, in a moment of shock and confusion, commits an act that endangers the Graystone household.
Perhaps the most intriguing character of all, however, is Adama's brother Sam (Sasha Roiz), a gangster who's scary, menacing ¡ª and gay.
